Summer is basically here, and what’s more fun than all the good summer cookouts? You’ll want to make sure your home is ready for guests, and here are some easy tips to make that happen.
1. Inspect your roof
Nothing tells your guests that you are behind on your home maintenance faster than leaks and signs of water damage. Even if you aren’t planning your summer cookouts, you’ll want to inspect your roof in the spring or early summer. Winter weather can be hard on the exterior of your home, especially the roof.
2. Clean your gutters
While you are inspecting your roof (or having someone inspect it for you), you might as well have your gutters cleaned. While you undoubtedly had them cleaned in the fall, to clear out all the fallen leaves, your gutters still accumulated more gunk over the winter, and this is a good time to get it all cleaned out.
3. Check the rest of the exterior
You’ll want all your home to look its best for guests, so take a walk around the house, checking for peeling paint, siding damage or anything else which needs to be addressed before you show your home off to all your friends and family. It’s not just for show, however. A twice-yearly inspection (spring and fall) is just a good habit to develop.
4. Have your AC inspected
If you’ve ever had your AC go out, you know it seems to happen at the worst time, either when you have guests over or on the hottest day of the season. Or both. (Yes, this happened to me when we had guests arrive on what turned out to be the hottest day that particular May.) A regular AC checkup should prevent unpleasant surprises.
5. Treat for pests
You want your guests to go home pleasantly stuffed, not covered with mosquito bites. Here are some great tips for keeping your yard mosquito free. Don’t forget to place and light citronella candles near where you’re entertaining. They do make a big difference!
